Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Business Development Manager, to join our $700 Million+ Life Sciences business. The position is located at our fast growing Mullingar, Ireland office but open to hybrid-candidates located elsewhere in Ireland/Europe. This is a significant role within the Company and commercial function. The ideal candidate will work very closely with R&D, sales teams and business unit as we grow in injectable and expanded markets for high value materials/excipients.
The Business Development Manager will be responsible for driving growth and supporting Ashland’s injectable strategy in a variety of situations including leading Innova (our new product development process) projects, managing/growing new products and participating as the commercial expert in assigned portfolio assets.
You will help to develop and drive strategic projects, global strategy and marketing plans and lead the implementation of targets/measures. You will participate in expanding the scope of a growing facility. In addition, you will need to help create consumer insights to drive innovation and new product development in the pharmaceutical sector.
The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Drive business development in the injectable excipients and medical device materials space for assigned assets.
  • Expand reach of our viatel bioresorbable polymers into new application markets in wider pharmaceutical & medical devices markets.
  • A candidate who can grow into a technical-commercial point of expertise to support customer needs or resolution of same would be attractive.
  • Lead efforts in the transdermal drug delivery space for wider Ashland excipients including Viatel and Gantrez: build market understanding, outline strategy, understand trends, key players and liaise with customers/stakeholders.
  • Develop/execute business case, resources, and marketing plans for new polymer materials/services in high value market segments.
  • This may include polymers/services for medical devices, drug delivery or other related spaces.
  • Work with the global sales team to identify customer opportunities and expand the business development [sales/pipeline] efforts.
  • Seek out new material technologies in life sciences segment for Ashland to pursue by organic development or inorganic routes.
  • Organic: Drive new Innova projects for internal development of new materials/ingredients.
  • Inorganic: Support activities relating to external technologies that may have potential fit in Ashland portfolio.
General Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with R&D, technical service, regulatory, sales and marketing teams to develop new applications, products, and technologies.
  • Work with sales and technical service, identify key stakeholders within the customers’ organization to build and foster strong relationships leading to mutually beneficial partnerships.
  • Grow and translate the opportunity pipeline into revenue to meet business goals
  • Identify and support resolution of bottleneck areas required for business growth at our Mullingar facility.
  • Support sales to segment customers and analyze market environment, industry drivers, and competitive landscape in order to maximize value.
  • Develop promotional plans/programs to maximize reach of our technologies including presentations / webinars / tradeshows
  • Identify and assess potential business opportunities utilizing market research, business intelligence, competitive and scientific analysis, and pursue/maximize opportunities with the end goal of growing revenue and increasing profitability and market share.
  • Seek opportunities to grow the business through strategic partnerships, funding applications and product development agreements internally and with interested parties.
  • Working as part of the Pharma team preparing business plans, identifying opportunities, and launching products
  • Define key marketing performance metrics and tracking tools to provide market research, forecasts, competitive analyses, campaign results and market trends in order to translate results into actionable insights
  • Support entry/communication/feedback versus orders / samples and to enhance relationship with customers.
In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, pharmacy, chemistry, or related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a related field.
  • A technical background in pharmaceutical / medical industry or materials technology would be an advantage.
  • Ability to travel, up to 25% globally.
  • Strong sense of personal accountability regarding decision-making.
  • Highly analytical and strategic thinker excited to identify and create opportunities to grow business.
  • An enthusiastic problem-solver with a strong result orientation.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and working collaboratively, cross-functionally, and globally.
  • Ability to build a compelling business case to justify executing on business proposals with financial acumen.
  • Ability to thrive in a multinational and multicultural environment.
The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:
  • An advanced degree, preferably an MBA, MS or PhD.
  • Relevant knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry or medical materials industry.
  • Past experience working within a phase/stage gate development process.
