Johnson & Johnson MedTech is hiring a Senior Legal Counsel located in Toronto (Markham), Ontario with a hybrid schedule. Remote work locations may also be considered on an individual basis.

As Senior Legal Counsel, you will support Johnson & Johnson MedTech companies in Canada and report to the Vice President Law, J&J MedTech Canada. The businesses currently supported are Biosense Webster, Cerenovus, DePuy Synthes, Ethicon, Mentor and Vision (Vision Care and Surgical Vision). There will also be the opportunity to join the leadership team(s) for some of these companies.
You will be responsible for providing practical and timely guidance, advice and counsel to business and cross functional partners in all areas of law to further the interests of the business while protecting the company's rights, interests and reputation. Duties will also include general legal support and management including issue identification, contract drafting, negotiation, training and other assignments as needed.
Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate legal matters for the business; partnering with internal clients, colleagues in the law department and outside counsel, as appropriate, to support business opportunities while ensuring compliance with legislation, industry guidelines and internal policies.
  • Provide legal advice on a wide range of proposed business initiatives and materials, in the areas of sales and marketing, regulatory affairs, health care compliance, digital advertising, internet laws, and advertising claims, procurement, and competition.
  • Prepare and negotiate commercial agreements across functional areas, including distributor and agency agreements, non-disclosure agreements, equipment sale and leasing, and corporate overlay agreements with hospital customers relating to the supply of products and solutions.
  • Work with the Strategic Customer Group in responding to, and advising on legal issues related to, Requests for Proposals and tenders.
  • Identify, assess, manage and prevent legal risks associated with the changing business and regulatory environment.
  • Draft and develop legal templates, SOP's and processes including relating to contract management.
  • Conduct legal and compliance training sessions for colleagues across the various business franchises. Opportunity to present legal issues at management boards of the various franchises supported by this role.
Education:
  • A Juris Doctor or equivalent legal degree and admission to a Canadian bar or equivalent (in good standing) in order to practice law in Canada is required as well as a member of the bar of a common law province in Canada.
Experience and Skills:
Required
  • A minimum of 6 years' experience in private practice and/or in-house is required.
  • Excellent knowledge of contract law is underpinned by an ability to work both independently and as a team player; excellent client relationship, communication and leadership skills and the ability to work with a variety of people with varying degrees of legal exposure is required.
  • In addition to strong drafting and negotiation skills, this role requires strong legal and business judgment with an orientation to finding solutions.
  • Ability to meet stringent timelines, and handle multiple demands simultaneously.
Preferred:
  • Competency in French considered an asset but not mandatory.
Other:
This position includes minimal travel within North America.
