In RSSL we are customer focused, science led and results driven. The role at Scientist II is to undertake a practical role with various technical supervisory responsibilities within the Pharmaceutical Wet Chemistry laboratory. Play a key role in ensuring that projects are performed and supervised effectively and accurately within agreed timescales and to appropriate quality standards. This role focuses on routine analyses of raw materials and method verification using wet chemistry techniques. Train junior members of the team as required.



Primary Accountabilities / Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality customer service at all times by ensuring effective organisation of assigned workload, integrity of analytical data generated and timely/accurate provision of results.
  • Perform method verification and design study protocols with support.
  • Assist with technical aspects for client proposals for routine pharmacopoeia studies.
  • Perform a range of pharmacopoeia routine analysis using following wet chemistry techniques: UV Spectrophotometer, FTIR, TLC, TOC, Titrations and Gravimetric techniques, Density, Refractive index, Optical rotation, SOR, PH Conductivity, Osmolarity
  • Basic maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment
  • Proficient in the use of generic and specific software packages required for the role: LIMS system and instrument specific software
  • Review & approve OOS & OOT investigations, CAPA, deviation
  • Write & review SOPs.
  • Perform method verification/validation following protocol.
  • Training/coaching junior staff, on analytical & wet chemistry techniques.
  • To liaise with clients, business development and line management to ensure effective communication of project proposals and results.
  • Participate in client and stake holders meetings as required
  • Deliver presentations to technical stakeholders and clients as required
  • Plan own workload and plan routine projects for junior staff
  • Train junior members of the team in routine methods
  • Work to the highest standards of safety and quality by ensuring that appropriate COSHHs, risk assessments and SOPs are understood and followed.
  • To complete assigned quality actions on a timely manner
  • Assist with the documentation of SOPs for simple equipment and tests and generation of Risk Assessments and COSHH
  • To understand and work to the requirements of GMP and UKAS.


Experience required:

  • Educated to Degree in chemistry
  • 3+ years of industry experience working in wet chemistry or relevant laboratory
  • Able to perform a range of pharmacopoeia routine analysis using following wet chemistry techniques such as UV Spectrophotometer, FTIR, TLC, TOC, Titrations and Gravimetric techniques, Density, Refractive index, Optical rotation, SOR, PH Conductivity, Osmolarity.
  • Can manage basic maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment
  • Knowledge of LIMS system and instrument specific software
  • Experience reviewing & approving OOS & OOT investigations, CAPA, deviation and writing & reviewing SOP
  • Can perform method verification/validation following protocol.
  • Can train/coach junior staff, on analytical & wet chemistry techniques.
