Key Purpose of the Role

• As a lab-based scientist working on drug discovery projects you will deliver expertise in the area of assay development and assay optimisation.

• Collaborating with senior and junior colleagues, you will implement new technologies to ensure the robustness and efficacy of these assays. 

• Meeting project objectives within agreed timelines is paramount, often overseeing multiple areas simultaneously. 

• Your contribution to our Assay Development Team will involve generating novel ideas and leveraging your expertise to influence project direction. 

• Maintaining meticulous experimental records and drafting comprehensive reports are integral aspects of the role. 

• Additionally, you will provide training in assay development and optimization to junior colleagues, acting as a subject matter expert in troubleshooting scenarios. 

• Your commitment to continuous improvement will drive enhancements within our workplace processes, ensuring we remain at the forefront of scientific innovation.

• Staying abreast of the latest scientific developments is essential, enhancing your scientific visibility through project contributions, internal and external presentations. 

Candidate profile

• A PhD or BSc/MSc degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Biochemistry, Neuroscience or Pharmacology) plus relevant postgraduate experience in assay design and development, achieved in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry or as part of an MSc or PhD program.

• Extensive experience in the handling and maintenance of mammalian cell cultures and the production of recombinant cell lines (e.g. transfection).

• Experience in developing plate-based bioassays (e.g. cellular and ELISA type assays).

• A practical understanding of a wide range of assay methods and technologies (for example fluorescence, luminescence, flow cytometry, TRF) as applied to a range of biological drug targets.

• Experience in molecular biology.

• Experience in the use of bioanalytical software (e.g. Excel & GraphPad Prism).

• Knowledge of best practices when it comes to the design of experiments and rigorous data integrity and an ability to write effective SOPs.

• Excellent problem-solving skills, strong delivery focus and communication skills.

• Be able to work both independently and within a project team, and as a project leader.

• Excellent team working and networking skills with experience of interacting effectively across different disciplines and expertise.

• Experience of working in external collaborations, both in academia and/or the pharmaceutical industry.
